Editing Termion, post #11

Yup, this one is posted early. I woke up early, and thanks to catsitting and a change of position at work, I didn't have to leave early today. So after checking out life on the net....I sat down and worked on 719 words of chapter 9! Managed to edit a Jinna pov section. I've fleshed things out so its clearer how she reaches a certain conclusion and why she brushes someone off.

I can work on this later on today! :) Better get ready and head for work now.

Editing Termion, post #10

Today I've worked through around 1119 words on chapter 9! Yay! It feels good to be back in edit mode. I've reached the limit of my muse today, so here's a round up of what I've covered.

Changed a section from one pov to another (and thereby adding different feelings in,)

The events in this chapter take place in a kitchen (a popular place for my characters).
A letter is involved.
As is a not so subtle bid for freedom.

I hope to continue work on it tomorrow :)

Editing Termion, Post #10

*punches hand in air*

I've finished chapter 8! whoohoo!

After a wobble of self-doubt earlier (thanks Sarah for the boost), I got back on the horse, and discovered it's okay being so high off the ground. It's not as scary as I'd imagined.

Tomorrow, I'll aim to finish chapter 9. Now, its time for relaxation (muse fodder) - anime!

General update

Editing will carry on tonight for Termion! It will! No matter how tired I am for waking at 4.33am...:)

On the morning commute today I worked out more for APWP. Cat invasion is planned. I am not kidding.

Getting ideas for a new religious wip - it'll be sci-fi! Set in space (lots of scope for expansion), protag (female, naturally. Might be married, not sure yet) is part of a diplomatic team. Said team comes from a less conservative planet/colony. On way to conservative colony/colony with mixed religions where there's a lot of tension. Ambassador dies. Protag has to step in. Much *conflict* involved :) In very early stages of imagination. Got to work out weapons next...I'm thinking of knives - less likely to cause a hull breach.

Editing Termion, post # 7

I'm on chapter 7! I finished chapter 6, and have written the first scene in chapter 7. There are 3 scenes, one with Jinna, then Tarc, then back to Jinna.

Oh my word my stomach was sloshing around as I edited the first of 2 or 3 bad dreams which Jinna has. I've had my share of decapitation thank you. Methinks I won't be using it in a wip for a while.
Hopefully if I make myself feel sick the writing might be having an effect on my beta reader. I gues its worse cos I see it all like a film in my head.

Sorry beta-reader, sorry. I know this isn't your thing. It's not all gross, I promise! Tarc makes meringues :) The Warden gets hit round the head. (great moment).

I love Termion!

Remind me tomorrow night when I get back to editing how much I love it.

Editing Termion, Post * 2

Note: I'm using a mac for this post, and can't find the number key! so a * is there instead.

The original chapter one is now edited. It morphed into 2 chapters.

Original word count: 2374
New, 2 chapter combined word count: 4860

I'm munching on some vege curry, a grin plastered across my face as I scroll down the word document. I've instructed the program to show deleted words in red (crossed out), new words in blue, original in black. There's an awful lot of blue - over 3 pages worth! It's satisfying to see the progress I've made so far. Yay! Kinda spurring me forward.

Now, just got to add the new POV. Which for now will have a short chapter of its own. Chapter lengths will be longer as time goes on. But now, before I write it in, I plan on it being short (for suspense value). The character might have other ideas.

UPDATE: I haven't written the POV - decided to post the chapters on the *shiny* new Termion queue on CC. It'll go in the ads once my beta-reader has attacked it (so somewhen in August). I just want it up. Must stop smiling madly at the computer screen.

Time for some anime :D

*sob* no anime!

I'm snatching glances at my dvd player, as I sit with my laptop whirring away on my lap. (Mine always have noisy fans...) I'm foregoing my daily dose of anime to get some editing in today. I'm not the happiest of bunnies. I love my anime to pieces. It's Japanese practice, and fun, and time to knit.

However, as my beta-reader kindly pointed out I have 23 days until Termion is due. I'm still on chapter 2. And I'm adding new POV...so I need to get cracking. Guess I'll be sacrificing a few things until then. Maybe cutting down to 1 anime will be enough...

On the good news there are a whole load of reviews on my review blog. Getting it to what it looks like now has taken a lot longer than anticipated. That's what's been eating my writing time. One day, when I have time, I'll work on this blog. For now, it'll do.

Editing Termion, Post #1

There are going to be many posts like these, so I thought I'd number them.

Yesterday I spent a good 2 hours 30 mins editing what was chapter 1 of Termion. It's now chapter 1 & 2. It grew!

This shouldn't have been a surprise, because I tend to write too few details in my first draft. It doubled in size! I had to split it, and found a good place for it. I'm happy with the current chapter 1.

Chapter 2 is a different story. I think the problem was I was trying to finish it before bed (bed time isn't moveable on a work night). So perhaps I was rushing it. But...its not right. I need more details, more of a build-up, etc. However, there is hope. On the commute to work, Bankar pointed out putting his POV in would add another dimension to the story. I agree with him. So I worked out the rest of chapter 2 in my head (and a few scenes later on in the story). So I've got lots to be getting on with! (and 30 days to do it all in). If the first chapter is an indication of the others, Termion is going to be a lot bigger than it was originally! (which wasn't huge for a YA). It's all good!

Writing = will happen AFTER Japanese homework tonight. Due to my birthday on Wednesday, I can't do it last minute on weds. Which is fine..only...I want to attack chapter 2! Poor muse, she'll have to wait.

It's June! (almost)

After a relaxing day, I'm about to attack chapter 1 of Termion. Got about 1/2 left to edit (I'm adding a bit to the beginning, had edited the middle, and haven't got to the end). I've got my determined face on: unless things happen beyond my control, I'm doing everything in my power to have it ready for beta reading on July 1st!

BTW if anyone else is interested in beta-reading it over july, message me :) I never say no to volunteers.

Let the editing commence!

Thus begineth the edit of Termion.

Deadline: July 1st

Motto: Thou shalst edit every daye.

(and possibly learn old English spelling).

*eyes glint*

POA revised again

Moments after I'd published the previous post, I received a message from a fellow writer. So here's the twice revised POA

* Still write 1 page a day on APWP

* By 1st July (2009), have a revised version of Termion.
* Give said edition to my fellow writer. We're swapping stories for beta reading!
* Once beta reading complete, make another round of revisions.

Could be an entertaining month and a half. It's fun having someone at the same point as me, good encouragement for both of us.

if we slack without good reason, the infamous flaming wooden spoon will emerge!

Chasing the dream

The idea of this blog post comes from a paragraph in a friend's wip, where one character is questioned about whether they are chasing their dream. It struck me in the heart. I bluntly replied 'no, I haven't been'.

I haven't been chasing my dream lately. Yes, I've been busy in life. But, I've also been a little lazy to some extent. I've been focusing on others' work. This is important - creating links and forging bonds with fellow writers really helps when the time comes for critiquing of a novel. But, sometimes the focus comes away from the dream.

I'm hoping the dream here is obvious! To get to the stage where I feel my work is acceptable for submitting to agents.

By acceptable, I mean as polished as I can possibly get it with the help of critiques. To the best writing I can achieve without help from an agent and editor.

I'm hoping that this can be November/December this year for Termion. Which means I've got a lot of work ahead. I plan on finishing Imperial Intrigue (draft 1), then revising Termion. I'm on chapter 5 now. I average around 30-35 chapters per novel at the moment, so just another 30 odd to go! I can do this, and I must write every day. I can write 1 chapter a day....its very doable in first draft stage, so that's what I'm aiming for. At the least, I'll be writing 500 words a day (see earlier post).

So, are you chasing the dream?

Breakthrough (or very bad idea) with Imperial Intrigue!

Gaming has many advantages. Including letting the muse have fun.

While playing away on Last Remnant, my muses had a breakthrough with Imperial Intrigue.

Background: I had previously been toying with having II set in same world as Termion.

The breakthrough is that it will be.

Here, Termions will take a backseat role. They will be the Emperor's personal bodyguards. At the moment, few people will know their true nature. It explains why no-one ever succeeds in assassinating the Emperor any more. Or why the Emperor doesn't see his nominated air as a threat.

As before, there will be a rogue group (possibly). Only they can't be subdued by force. No. Hallie will have to use the very drug she's in exile for against the Termion. And it'll work :) They'll be placid.

Just working out a few other major details, but this does explain why Imperial Intrigue didn't work when I first wrote it. Termion didn't exist back then.

If it doesn't work out, I can go back to my original idea (no Termion), but in the day where people like multi-book series, its worth a shot.

Have you ever written anything, (draft or not), shelved it, and come back to it only when you've gained elements from another story (or just a completely different viewpoint on it all?)

My muse, Termion Finished!

Inspired by Michelle, here's a post on my muse.

She is snoring away, tucked under a home made quilt, after FINISHING 1ST DRAFT OF TERMION!

These days she is very hyperactive, a state encouraged by regular icecream, chocolate, fudge, toffee and anything sweet.

When in a mood, she'll sit on my shoulder, cross her arms, and refuse to cooperate unless I obey her wishes.

When in her editing mood, she'll sit on my shoulder, cross her arms, only to uncross them, point her hand at the laptop and screech YOU AREN'T WRITING THAT!

When in a happy I'll-let-you-have-my-ideas-freely mood, she'll sit on my shoulder, swing her legs, plant both hands on her knees and shout encouraging 'whoohoos' at me.

I love my muse.

As for Termion!

1st draft = 28 chapters = 57.4k!

Very very happy. Going to edit IE, write Gem Manipulator for light relief, then work on revision 1 of Termion.

Monday, 19 January 2009

My muse feels she's overworked. I disagree.

Just because she helped me write 2 chapters yesterday, she's got just over half way into chapter 27 of Termion, and decides that because the chapter has deviated from the planned path, she refuses to lift the fog on the next part of the scene. Argh!

So I've dutifully posted up 10 chapters on CC. Still no inspiration. Going to have dinner, and pray that muse will be appeased. If not, I'll game til she tells me what happens next!

What do you do when there is just fog over what should happen next?

Sunday, 18 January 2009

I wrote 2 chapters in 1 day!

:D Beams at computer.

4309 words = my word count for today.

2 full chapters = 25 & 26 on Termion.

I'm very very happy :)

2008 - inspired by Inky's post

Okay, so my reply to Inky's post was way too long. So I'm putting it here!

2008 I...
Moved back in with my parents, and fully adjusted so they don't drive me mental (in a nice way, I love them to pieces).

Learnt to relax a lot more. Worry less. Take life easy (yeah..still working on it).

Completed *thinks* Imperial Intrigue. Learnt it needs complete overhaul.

Started and FINISHED what is now Inescapable ties and in the dreaded edit session. Figured out (which was why this wip happened) that I do want some religious wips to show that my religion is very cool and not what some people could think it is. Would like to sub it by the end of this year.

Came up with and started Termion. Which, just like Inky's Jesscapades, I believe would make a fab debut novel. It's not too complex
(like II, & Misty Chaos which are in the wings)

I find it funny, I'm a little gruesome in it, but its cool. The concept is there. This I hope to finish by the end of the month (at least by end feb max) and polish for subbing by the end of the year.

Came up with idea for Gem Manipulator, which again I hope to finish this year, possibly sub (yes, i have a lot of goals!). It's a 'fun' wip, hopefully light hearted. Looking forward to continuing it :) (It has the potential for sequels and prequels! As do all my wips...)

Came up with idea for Time Turner, which'll get started some point this year.

Oh and came up with idea for Power of Words...which'll also get started at some point...

Determined to make 2009 the year I start subbing!

Figured out that my genre for all my wips is hopefully going to end up as YA :) (ranging from fantasy/sci-fi-religious - broad spectrum!)

Completed a few video games. Got a new console. Realised gaming helps me relax and is good for getting my muse thinking!

Knitted a lot. Read a little. Made new friends :) Enjoyed life!

1st day of 2009!

It will be in a few hours. I'm blogging now, because chances of blogging tomorrow are slim. I'll be wanting to game :) (last day of cat sitting).

I have developed a plan of action for my wips!

Write first draft. Post on CC in non-credit queue. (private).
Revise 1st draft. Post on CC in credit queue (private).
Revise 1st revision. Post on CC in credit queue - quite possibly public!
Hopefully not too many more revisions. Follows the same pattern.
Grab agents who represent my genre (varied, depending on the wip).

I will sub to agents in England. So far the ones I seen don't have email subs like you do across the pond...just snail mail :)

It'll put a stop to the insane amount of time I spend online when I have access to the net. Less surfing, more writing or reading!

Haven't quite finished chapt 17 of Termion, but I'm over half way on it. Very happy upon learning the word count for YA, and for working out Termion is YA :)

I'm off, hoping to sleep through any fireworks (I don't like them). It disturbs my muse big time.

Going to curl up and read Poison Study! Onto chapter 3....

On target.

Yay! For once I can say that.

I've finished editing 1 chapter of Inescapable Ties. What? I hear you ask. That's the new title for Natsu. I have a title!

Took a good 15 minutes to come up with it. Via google, I discovered no other book has the title (which is always a let down when I think I've found a title, but discover its been used before).

It suits the story because it involves family ties, ties of faith, ties of friendship, and any other tie you can think of (oh! Even the physical ties (like handcuffs)).

It took a long time to edit the chapter. A scarily long time. But I've done it. And it's up on CC. I'm 1/4 the way through chapter 17 of Natsu. Taking a little break. I'm happy with what I've got (Jinna in aquaparadise) so far (as happy as you can be with a first draft), and I'm going to read a little Poison Study for motivation, then head back and crack on with another 500 odd words (I usually average around 2k a chapter).

I'm sure I've posted my January aim , but just in case I haven't here's what I hope I can do.

* Finish draft 1 of Termion.
* Complete edit of Inescapable Ties.
It's possible.

Not only the title changed for IT, but characters. Naim is now Rahina. :) (well, wanted to keep Nadia (even if she is a very minor character here).

My muse is coming up with the title for the sequel, which will be all from the POV of Safiya (who has no POV in IT). The Dawn of Purple. It'll deal with flashbacks to when Safiya started wearing purple trousers (which are more significant than they sound), as well as the current time when she's an outgoing protector of her tribe.

Tomorrow is 2009, and I intend to write/edit most days of the year.

Saturday, 27 December 2008

Nice Lazy Saturday

Well, sort of :)

I had my usual Arabic lesson, and am now cat sitting (again) Which means crit time! The theory is I catch up on crits 1 day a month (new personal rule). I am critting....only most are not credited. Never mind! I'm loving what I'm reading.

I've got a personal mention (anonymous) on one of my friends' sites. And I'm remaining anonymous for it too :)

Writing - well, I edited 5 paragraphs of Natsu last night, which counts for something, right? I've worked out more in Termion, just need to write it. Might get a few words in tomorrow...but today is crit fest time!
